Marketplace campaigns are a key factor in Dogwood Alliance’s work. Through our campaigns, we help corporate leaders in the boardroom understand the important environmental and economic benefits of supporting sustainable forestry in their manufacturing and sourcing practices. We also mobilize thousands of concerned consumers to add their voices to the conversation.
Paper
Because paper production has such a devastating impact on Southern Forests, most of our campaigns have focused on paper producers and their largest corporate customers. Since 1996, Dogwood Alliance has launched successful campaigns that helped make big changes in the office supply industry and among key paper manufacturers in the Southeast. Companies like Staples, AbitibiBowater and Georgia Pacific have all become leaders in transforming their practices to protect endangered forests.
In 2007, we expanded our paper campaign to include paper packaging, and quickly saw a number of gains in the music and cosmetics industries — two of the largest paper packaging consumers. Now, we’ve added paper packaging in the fast-food industry. Some companies, like McDonalds, have understood the importance of protecting forests and have begun to develop sourcing and use policies that protect forests. Others — specifically industry giant KFC — are resisting change and continuing to use paper from endangered forests.
Climate and Bioenergy
But paper is only one reason to care for Southern forests. They also play a vital role in combating climate change, a role currently threatened by an emerging practice of burning forests for fuel. To stand up for our climate and protect our forests, we’ve added new campaigns to support the Carbon Canopy and fight against the bioenergy boondoggle.
