AbitibiBowater is the country’s largest producer of newsprint. Dogwood’s 2005 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Bowater marked an important break away from the business-as-usual destructive forestry practices associated with the production of pulp and paper in the Southern US.
Important components of the MOU took several years to implement. During that period Dogwood Alliance closely monitored the company’s progress. We published two reports documenting Bowater’s (and subsequently AbitibiBowater’s) progress in meeting the specific commitments outlined in the MOU as well as its improvements to forestry practices in the South more generally. We were pleased that both our reports found “substantial compliance” with the terms of our agreement.
