Echo Project and Dogwood, Atlanta, Georgia PDF Print E-mail
This past weekend we tabled at The Echo Project outside of Atlanta, and it was a success!

We enjoyed the beautiful fall weather and the sounds of DubConscious, Perpetual Groove, Cat PowerFlaming Lips (and many others) as we discussed saving our Southern forests. Thanks to all of you who stopped by our table, picked up some literature, signed the packaging statement, or the musician's packaging pledge; we're really making progress. Stop by the site later to check out pictures (we'll be adding them soon).

Note from Eva:

Echo project was a success for Dogwood Alliance—we had some great conversations with newfound activists.  Our great volunteers and I collected signatures from hundreds of people to send to packaging companies like Yum! Brands to let them know that we don’t think endangered forests should be used for packaging products that are used once and thrown into a landfill.

We also made friends with a few other really cool organizations doing good work to protect our natural resources.

One of the best parts was letting artists know how they can help to green the music industry.  Dogwood volunteers James, Megan and I put together packets about greening the music industry which were handed out to all of the musicians checking in (about 150!).  The packets included factsheets about what they can do, who the good packaging companies are in the music business (NOT International Paper), and where they can go to sign the letter to Help green the music industry.

We were allowed backstage to hang out materials, and let artists know about the packaging problem in the music industry.   Everyone had environmental issues on the mind, so it was a great place to be on behalf of Dogwood Alliance.  Here’s to another successful outreach event, raising the issues of protecting Southern forests, the packaging problem, and taking action!

Special thanks to Paige, for volunteering every day, to Jill, Devon, Lindsey, and to Allison Hogan for helping to organize the Eco tent!  Also thanks to Josh with Music Allies, working the media backstage who helped us to get the word out, and Sunshine and Paul at Tree Sound studios running the solar stage and spreading the word about Dogwood Alliance!  Last but not least, thanks to Mark at Sustainable Waves for all their doing to help green the music industry.

Great Event to volunteer and Dogwood!
written by Lindsey Barnes, October 22, 2007
I had such a great time at this event. Not only did I hear great music, but I found out about many other environmentally conscious and inspiring organizations in the Atlanta area. I left the concert with new friends, new knowledge and much respect for the organizers of this event. It's always so much fun to hang out with Dogwood!

It can be a big challenge for music events and large festivals like this to be environmentally friendly-- due to health code rules and the needs of so many people in a small space. What strategies have you seen that work? Recycling is almost pointless because most festivals don't allow glass and you can't recycle paper products soiled with food. Compostable cups? What can I encourage my local festivals to do?

what festivals can do
written by E.V.A, October 31, 2007
You're right that compostable cups are a great idea. Recycling does play a big role and is very important, as well a an eco fund (add $ to your ticket to go to enviro causes or an organization), carbon offsets from Native Energy to offiset all the driving, having an eco-area where festival goers can take action, carpool boards. The list goes on. Echo did a pretty good job, you can check out their efforts at www.echo-project.com.
