Julianna Martinez did not discover Dogwood Alliance until this past semester at Duke when her friend Rachel Weber (who is also an intern at Dogwood) told her about her previous work at Dogwood Alliance. It was Rachel’s positive experience with Dogwood and how excited she was to return to the organization that convinced Julianna that Dogwood would be the perfect fit for her as well. Julianna is excited to work with an organization that is dedicated to making change while engaging with communities locally and globally.

Julianna grew up as a girl scout in Western North Carolina.

She says,

Needless to say, I LOVE spending time outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, rafting, camping, etc, I love to explore the beauty that is right outside our doors! The woods offer a unique peace that I have yet to find elsewhere. I enjoy hanging out and exploring in the woods whenever I can.

Julianna is most excited to learn about how Dogwood Alliance engages with communities across the Southeastern United States and overseas.

Julianna elaborates,

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with my team so closely this summer on the SOS Tour and learn how Dogwood connects the input of local people with that of local elected officials.

Outside of academics, Julianna is on the cheerleading team for Men’s Basketball and Football at Duke University. She also loves hiking, traveling and crafting and is a self-proclaimed movie enthusiast. In her first week in Asheville, she explored three different theatres and saw five different films. She’s “already addicted” to our $3 and $5 discount showings.

You can check out the full #SOSTour schedule that Julianna will be going on here.
