Women are like forests. They have many important roles in our community. Women are the backbone of leadership. Women, especially women of color, have a unique perspective and voice in the movement. Like old growth forests, women have weathered and survived the most intense storms.

FLORENCE ANORUO

Dr. Florence Anoruo is an Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Science, a UNCF/Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Mentor, and Faculty Residency Program fellow. She became acquainted with Dogwood Alliance through her volunteer work with Wood Pellets NC (Southern Forests Conservation Coalition). She is known for her exemplary teaching, research, mentoring, and leadership in many university capacity building initiatives, especially in the areas of plant and environmental sciences, sustainability, wellness and nutrition. She received the National Society of Leadership and Success Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring award in 2015 and 2016.


Jill Cartwright

Jill has blazed a trail toward economic and racial justice. They began with organizations like Southerners On New Ground (SONG) and SONG Power. Jill has the ability to work with diverse stakeholders. The ability to craft equitable policies that support community-led resilience. At the Hive Fund, Jill collaborates with frontline leaders. Together, they build power in Black and Brown communities across the globe. They collectively create pathways to healing. This builds a victorious movement and a just transition.


Reverend Corine Mack

Reverend Corine Mack has spent 50 years advocating for equity and justice. Her work spans human and civil rights, workers’ rights, and environmental justice. She’s ministered in prisons throughout New England. She’s negotiated many collective bargaining contracts for workers in New York City. Rev. Mack is the President of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg NAACP. She hails from Harlem, NY, but now she lives in Charlotte, NC. She attended George Meany School for Labor Law and Cornell Law School. Rev. Mack believes the truth matters and we must all use our gifts to elevate our communities.


LORETTA SLATER

Loretta is the Executive Director of The Whitney M. Slater Foundation, which she and her mother founded in 2012 in memory of her daughter. Inspired by Whitney’s dream of providing better educational opportunities for African American women especially around health, the foundation educates frontline communities and communities of color on environmental health issues, supports early detection of cancer, and encourages second medical opinions. Loretta also works closely with Reverend Leo Woodberry on multiple initiatives, is an active member of Southeast Climate & Energy Network, and was a key organizer of the Justice First Tour, a solidarity movement for justice issues that convened in more than 27 cities and 12 states throughout the Southeast US.


DANNA SMITH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Danna is the founder of Dogwood Alliance. For over 25 years, she has been at the forefront of forest protection in the US, leading hard-hitting campaigns and negotiating ground-breaking forest protection commitments from some of the largest companies in the world. She is a leading voice connecting the dots between climate change, forest destruction and social justice and pushing for forest protection in the US at a scale necessary to meet the sustainability challenges of the 21st Century. She holds a law degree from Emory University.
