NC Loses When Europe Burns Pellets from Our Wetlands

Letter to the Editor reprinted from the Charlotte Observer

I read with interest the Aug. 28 article about the booming wood pellet export industry in North Carolina (“Report targets Ahoskie pellet mill for clear-cutting,” Aug. 28).

I was disheartened to learn these pellets are being produced in massive quantities from our trees, only to be shipped and burned in European power plants as a “renewable” energy.

We North Carolinians know a thing or two about renewable energy. We are sixth in the country for solar energy capacity. Our wind energy potential continues to attract companies here.

We have some of the brightest minds on the planet developing new renewable energy technologies. It doesn’t take a scientist to realize there is nothing green about logging wetland forests and burning the trees for energy.
