Biodiversity in Your Backyard: Tree Identification

At first glance trees may look very similar. But, if you look closely and pay attention, you could become an expert on identifying trees. First, you need to know what to look for. This blog will give you tips and hints so you can identify some tree species easily.

How to Identify: Maple Trees

When you hear “maple”, probably the first thing that comes to mind is breakfast syrup. But no, maple is more than pancakes or waffles. In fact, there are many different species of maple tree. Thirteen species are native to North America. Maple trees come in every size, from the small Japanese maple tree to 150 foot tall maple trees.

a maple tree is an easy tree to identify

Identifying Features:

  • An easy way to identify a maple tree is by looking at their leaves. The typical leaf has a mixture of large and small teeth, and the veins originate from a single, roughly central point on the leaf. You’re not sure what that looks like? Take a look at the Canadian flag then!
  • All maples grow with opposite-branching leaves/buds/branches. That means that where one bud/branch sprouts, there’s another at the same location on the opposite side of the main branch/stem.

Where To Find Maples:

You can find maples in North America, Europe, and Northern Africa, but the majority of maple species can be found in Asia, specifically in Northern China.

Animals That Rely On Maple Trees:

Animals like moose, snowshoe hare, and flying squirrels eat maple seeds, buds, or leaves. Porcupines also consume the bark of the tree, which can harm or even kill the tree.

A crucial species that relies on maple trees is bees. We know that bees have the important task of pollination. Maple trees are an important source of pollen early in the spring for honey bees when they wake up from their hibernation. If you want to support your local bees, plant and raise maple trees!

Some Other Cool Facts

  • Maple trees can live up to 300 years or more.
  • The flavour of maple syrup depends on when the sap runs. Early season sap tends to be lighter in colour and flavour. Later in the season, when temperatures are warmer, the sap darkens, and the flavor gets stronger.
  • There’s fossil evidence showing that maple trees are so old that they were growing when dinosaurs roamed the Earth!
  • In Tennessee, maple trees are used to make whiskey. Charcoal from maple trees is essential for making Tennessee whiskey.

Trees You Can Identify: Sycamore

Sycamore is a tree that has had some historic appearances in literature and popular culture. These trees can reach 98 to 130 feet in height and 6 feet in diameter.

Identifying Features:

  • Sycamore leaves may look similar to maple leaves. This can be confusing, so you’ll need to pay attention to another detail. Sycamore leaves and branches alternate (while maples have opposite branching).
  • The other key identifying feature is the tree bark. The bark is covered with a whitish and reddish-brown patched surface. Creamy patches represent newly formed bark, while reddish-brown patches represent old bark. This gives the sycamore bark a mottled appearance.

Where To Find Sycamores:

The American sycamore is found as far North as Ontario, as far South as Florida, and West as far as Michigan, Nebraska, and Texas.

Animals That Rely On Sycamore Trees

Songbirds like finches and juncos eat the seeds of the sycamore. Beaver, squirrel, and muskrat also consume the fruits, and white-tailed deer occasionally graze on the vegetation. Many cavity-nesting birds, such as owls, flycatchers, and chimney swifts, inhabit the nearly hollow trunks of older trees. Wood ducks are known to build nests in the old tree trunks and some species of bats use sycamores as nursery trees.

Some Other Cool Facts

  • Over 250 years ago in what’s now West Virginia, a pair of brothers deserting the French and Indian War lived in hiding from 1764-1767 inside a giant hollow sycamore. The tree is now a historical landmark known as The Pringle Tree after the brothers.
  • During the battle on Brandywine Battlefield Park in Pennsylvania, an old sycamore tree provided protection for the whole army of General Washington.
  • Sycamore trees are even mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible.
  • In popular culture, sycamores symbolize strength, hope, and protection.

Trees You Can Identify: Willow

Willow trees are best known for their love of water and their dramatic and elegant appearance. You may recall this tree from the Harry Potter movies and books. The most recognizable willow tree species in the United States is probably the weeping willow. Their long, charming branches fall into an arch, creating a round canopy that brushes the ground.

Identifying Features:

  • Willow leaves are long, narrow, and smooth. They can be 1 to 2 inches long or longer with finely toothed leaf edges. Their leaves are light green on top with silvery undersides until they turn yellow in autumn.
  • Another useful tip is that a weeping willow tree can mostly be found in wet soils, usually near bodies of water, like streams, rivers, lakes, and wetlands.

Where To Find Willows:

These trees are native to China. However, they’re commonly planted and spread across North America. They’re commonly found from Ontario all the way South to Georgia and West to Missouri.

Animals That Rely On Willow Trees

Flowers from willow trees produce nectar and pollen necessary for bees. Weeping willows can be considered a bird sanctuary. Birds protect themselves from predators by hiding inside the foliage. Songbirds prefer to build their nests in these trees because the cottony material weeping willows produce works well for nest-building. Willow trees also provide food for rabbits, deer, porcupine, bears, muskrat, elk, and beavers.

Some Other Cool Facts

  • Willow trees have made appearances in some William Shakespeare plays. They’re associated with grief. The most famous literary reference to the willow is probably William Shakespeare’s “Willow Song” in Othello. They’re also mentioned in Hamlet and Twelfth Night.
  • People once chewed the bark of the willow to treat fever, inflammation, and pain. This is because the bark has a compound called salicin. This compound is used in a very popular and useful medication: aspirin.
  • Willow trees have an important meaning to many Native American tribes.

Trees You Can Identify: Birch

There are around 60 species of birch that grow around the world. One that can be found mostly in the United States is the paper birch.

Identifying Features:

  • Birch leaves are typically oval or triangular. They have a pointed end, a rounded base, and zigzag margins. These leaves are also arranged alternately.
  • An easy way to recognize a birch tree is by looking at its bark. The bark usually has a whitish-gray or silver color. Their barks peel off in strips. That is why they’re known for their paper-like texture and peeling nature.

Where To Find Birches:

We can find paper birch in the Northern part of North America. They grow from Alaska to Maine, but only as far South as the mountains of Virginia, Tennessee, and Oregon.

Animals That Rely On Birch Trees

Insects, birds, mammals, and fungi use these trees. Aphids grow on leaves, while caterpillars feed on the leaves. Birds such as woodpeckers, feed on the numerous insects that live in these trees, and they also use them to nest. Fungi have a symbiotic or parasitic relationship with birch trees.

Some Other Cool Facts

  • Birch trees spread their seeds on the wind and can easily populate habitats destroyed by fires.
  • Birch sap is used in the manufacture of wine, beer, and syrup in Northern Europe, Russia, and China.
  • In Finland, people use the leaves of birch to prepare tea.

Trees You Can Identify: Black Walnut

If you’re walking anywhere in the Eastern United States, you’ll likely encounter the black walnut tree. These trees are known for their beautiful wood and edible nuts.

Identifying Features:
